A Photographic Journey
North of the Humber River, the sparsely populated East Riding of Yorkshire spreads east across the Yorkshire Wolds to the coast and imperceptably crosses into North Yorkshire above Scarborough.
Undulating agrarian countryside gives way to the bleak miles of the North Yorkshire Moors. Along the lightly traveled A165 and the coast roads north from Bridlington and Flamborough Head to Whitby, landscapes blend into the North Sea under a low, clear sky—such as here in the arc of acclaimed Robin Hood Bay.

Crossing into the East Riding on the Humber Bridge, the pretty Georgian market town of Beverly highlights the beautiful Gothic collegiate church of Beverly Minster. Gentle farmland leads east to the coast and north to Scarborough, Yorkshire’s popular seaside holiday resort—featuring a complete lineup of traditional beachfront attractions.

From Scarborough, the A171 rides the top of the coastal cliffs north. Side roads lead down to beautiful scenic overlooks and the villages of Ravenscar, Fylingthorpe and Robin Hood’s Bay, where visitors walk on the sandy foreshore far below.[/caption]

Before the A171 turns inland across the top of the moors to the industrial cities of the River Tees, the coast saves its best for last at Whitby. We’ve already recommended a well-spent day (or two) in the historic harbor town. Just down Grape Lane, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum displays not only the person and work of England’s greatest naval explorer, but life in the 18th-century seaport.[/caption]
